あれよあれよという間にホームレスに陥り、シェルター内の様子などがつづられたblogを読んだことがある。こんなに聡明でユーモアのある人が。。。誰もが家を失う可能性がある。家がなければ職も得られない。希望もすべて失う。
昨日の講師Stefanが言うには、セルビアには野良犬野良猫がいっぱいいて、誰かが餌を与えるし、冬は寒いので家を作ってあげるそうだ。日本では、殺処分"(-""-)"になるケースも多々ある。

Charity Gives Homeless $5,700 Each in Trial Project

Canadian charity Foundations for Social Change has run a trial project where homeless people were given about $5,700 to see how they would spend it and if it would improve their lives.

The trial, called the New Leaf project, was run in Vancouver with the University of British Columbia in 2018. It included 115 homeless people, 50 of whom received a one-time payment of about $5,700. Researchers then followed each person for a year.

At the end of the trial, researchers found that those who received the money were able to move into stable housing in an average of three months, compared to those who didn't get the money who took five months.

She said it costs, on average, $55,000 annually for social and health services for one homeless individual. According to study data, the project saved the shelter system approximately $8,100 per person for a total of roughly $405,000 over one year for all 50.

Researchers also found that 52% of the money was spent on rent and food. There was also a 39% reduction in spending on goods like alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.

Almost 70% of those who got the money had regular access to food after one month, and better access to food for the rest of the year compared to those who didn't receive money.

However, Foundations for Social Change says it was careful to choose homeless people with a higher chance of success, so cash transfers might not work for everyone.

"There are certainly people who are homeless who have deeper, more severe problems," Steve Berg of the National Alliance to End Homelessness told CNN. However, he said that for many "it's simply a matter of — they ran out of money, lost a job, fell on hard times, became homeless."

The charity hopes to continue the project to help more homeless people in the area. According to a 2016 report from the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, at least 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness each year.
