Over 40% of Workers Are Considering Leaving Their Jobs

Research has found that 41% of workers around the world are thinking about leaving their current job within the next year.

The research comes from a survey done in January 2021 that included over 30,000 workers in 31 countries, including the US, the UK, Australia, South Korea and Japan.

The survey was done for Microsoft's 2021 Work Trend Index report.

The number of workers thinking about quitting their job was higher among younger employees.

Fifty-four percent of Gen Z workers — or those aged between 18 and 25— are considering leaving their current employers.

According to Microsoft, these numbers are a lot higher than they have been in previous years.

For example, separate surveys in 2019 and 2020 by the company Glint/found that about 70% of workers expected to still be/ with their current employer in two years.

Microsoft's research also found that 46% of workers are thinking of making a big change to their career paths, which could include finding a completely different type of job to what they are doing now.

The Work Trend Index notes that different groups have had very different experiences while working during the coronavirus pandemic.

Work Trend Index

Business leaders report feeling more positive than their staff, with 61% saying they are "thriving" — 23 percentage points more than workers with no decision-making authority.

Meanwhile, Gen Z workers, women, frontline workers and those who are just starting their careers were more likely to report struggling with work. Thirty-seven percent of workers said that their companies have been asking them for too much during the pandemic.

Microsoft says that giving workers the flexibility and resources to have more choice in how and where they work/ could help companies keep employees, and build a better work environment for everyone.
