最初にアメリカ大陸を訪れたヨーロッパ人はコロンブスではなくバイキングだったと証明されたという記事です。
今から千年前の1021年には、カナダのニューファンドランドにバイキングが定住していたと科学の力で証明した。
その測定方法はと言うと、993年に太陽が爆発を起こし、太陽嵐と呼ばれる高エネルギー放射線（X線、紫外線）が地球に向かって放射された。その放射線炭素が地球の樹木の年輪に刻み込まれた。つまり、993年の年輪は、はっきりと他の年のとは違いがわかる。大気中の濃度の変動が木の年輪ごとの濃度に影響するから。
植物は光合成によって放射性炭素を含んだ二酸化炭素を取り込み、生命が終わった時（切り倒された時）から、放射性炭素はその放射性崩壊の割合に従って減っていく。
木が切り倒された後の放射性炭素の減り具合と年輪で割り出すことに成功！

New research has accurately dated a Viking settlement in Newfoundland, Canada, for the first time, finding that Vikings had arrived in North America by the year 1021: exactly 1,000 years ago.

The study used a new way of dating/ trees and wooden objects by looking for evidence of a solar storm known to have reached Earth in the year 993. The storm caused a sudden increase in radioactive carbon among trees that were alive at the time.
