Poland Fined $580,000 a Day Until Coal Mine Closes

Poland's government has said that the country will continue to operate a coal mine on its border with the Czech Republic and Germany, despite being fined around $580,000 every day until the mine is closed.

The fines, which began on September 20, came several months after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ordered that operations be stopped at Turów coal mine in southwest Poland — an order that the country's government ignored.

The order followed a request made by the Czech government, which originally asked that the daily fine be set at almost $6 million.

The court eventually agreed to a lower fine. Nearby communities in Germany and the Czech Republic have long said that the mine drains their groundwater and causes both noise and air pollution.

The Turów mine produces lignite, a low-quality and less efficient type of coal that's also known as "brown coal" because of its color.

The mine was originally opened in 1904. The Turów mine supplies lignite to a nearby power station that provides around 5% of Poland's electricity and employs 3,600 people.

According to CNN, half the jobs in the region directly or indirectly depend on the mine.

Marcin Romanowski, undersecretary of state in Poland's Ministry of Justice, wrote in a tweet that his country was being fined for choosing not to leave its citizens without power, and for not closing the mine "overnight." He called the fines "robbery and theft," and said that the CJEU would not be getting any money from Poland.

The European Union is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels by the year 2030.

Poland relies on coal for up to 80% of its power, but has agreed to close its last coal mine by 2049.

In April, the mining license at Turów was extended until 2044.
