Osaka showed up for her first-round match wearing a black mask with white letters spelling out the name of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman fatally shot in her apartment by police in Kentucky. Osaka explained she brought seven masks — one for each match if she reached the final.

When asked by The Associated Press, Citizen Watch Co. would not comment on the masks, but expressed its joy that Osaka was wearing one of its watches. Yonex Co. expressed support for Osaka's feelings, while also stressing that she won her third Grand Slam using one of its rackets.
When asked about the masks, Nissin Foods — the noodle maker — would not comment, calling it "her personal matter." Nissan Motor Co. said it planned no statement.
The statement from the Japanese Prime Minister's Office also made no reference to Osaka's masks or racial injustice, saying on Twitter, "Congratulations. It was a full-set comeback from behind, and you never gave up till the end. Thanks for inspiring us."
