Study: Not Everyone Needs the Same Amount of Sleep

Taliesin.

Study: Not Everyone Needs the Same Amount of Sleep

Researchers say the amount of sleep a person needs changes depending on their genes and their body's internal clock, called the circadian rhythm.

Some people have more energy in the morning, while others have more energy in the evening or at night. But how long we should sleep is often thought to be the same for everyone. However, professors Louis Ptacek and Ying-Hui Fu, a husband and wife team at the University of California, San Francisco, told Time that the right amount of sleep is different for everyone. Around 10 years ago, Fu discovered a gene mutation linked to shorter sleep.

People with the mutation seemed to get the same benefits from just six hours of sleep as people without it got from eight hours. And last year, Fu and Ptacek found two more genes associated with shorter sleep, and are preparing a research paper about a fourth.

Fu has found that people who naturally need less sleep also tend to have more energy and are more optimistic than people who need more sleep. Short sleepers even appear to have a higher tolerance for pain and live longer.

Nobody is sure how common these mutations are, but Ptacek and Fu are collecting data on short sleepers to learn more. "If we can get a better understanding of why their sleep is more efficient, we can then come back and help everybody sleep more efficiently," said Fu.

There are a number of health risks associated with not getting enough sleep. It can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, and can also lead to depression and anxiety.

America's National Sleep Foundation says that adults aged 18 to 64 should get between seven and nine hours of sleep. Similar recommendations are given by the UK's National Health Service, and health authorities in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada
