Study: Any Alcohol During Pregnancy May Affect Child

A study from the University of Sydney has found that low levels of alcohol during pregnancy may affect children in later life, causing problems with behavior and mental health.

The study, which was published in American Journal of Psychiatry, looked at almost 10,000 children aged 9 and 10. The mothers self-reported how much alcohol they drank during pregnancy, and the children completed tasks to measure their cognitive ability.

Researchers also did a brain scan on the children and interviewed them. About 26% of the children were exposed to alcohol while their mothers' were pregnant with them. Of these, 60% had low levels of exposure and 40% had high levels.

Researchers found that children who were exposed to low levels of alcohol experienced more problems like anxiety, depression and poor attention compared to children who were exposed to no alcohol at all.

Heavier alcohol use was found to increase the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children by 25% and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) by 30%. People with ADHD can find it difficult to pay attention or sit still, while people with ODD anxiety, anger and following rules.

"Previous research has shown that very heavy alcohol use, such as binge drinking during pregnancy, can cause harm to the baby," said lead author Briana Lees. However, she says that the study shows that any alcohol use during pregnancy, "even low levels," can have a "subtle, yet significant" effect on the psychology and behavior of a child.

Many medical organizations already advise pregnant women to avoid alcohol completely. In the UK, for example, women were once told they could drink a small amount of alcohol when pregnant. This advice was changed in 2016, and now pregnant women are advised to avoid alcohol altogether.
