Tel Aviv is working on becoming the first city in the world to use roads that can wirelessly charge vehicles as they drive.
Israeli company Electreon designed the system, and is working with Tel Aviv to put 600 meters of charging units under the road on a two-kilometer route from the Tel Aviv University Railway Station to the Klatzkin Terminal in the north of the city. The charging units will be used to power an electric bus.

Electreon's charging units transfer energy from a city's electricity grid to the vehicles that travel over them. The vehicles use special receivers to then send that energy to their batteries. Electreon says its system takes away the need for charging stations for electric vehicles and reduces pollution

In a press release about the project, Tel Aviv's mayor, Ron Huldai, said that fighting pollution is at the top of the city's environmental agenda. If the system works well, the city may start using Electreon's system in more locations.
Electreon has been bringing its charging system to other countries too. On Gotland Island, Sweden, its system has been used for an electric bus between the airport and the town of Visby since 2018. And from December 2020, the system will be used for a bus service that connects energy company EnBW's training center in Karlsruhe, Germany, to the public transport system.
Electreon has also been testing a truck that can be used with its wireless charging system. Near Stockholm, Sweden, the company successfully charged a truck that was traveling at approximately 20 kilometers per hour. It now wants to test its truck at up to 80 kilometers per hour on the road where its system is used on Gotland Island.
