Absinthe: The Drink Banned for 100 Years:DMM英会話DailyNews予習復習メモ

Absinthe: The Drink Banned for 100 Years

Have you ever heard of the "green fairy"?

More commonly known as absinthe, this drink was very popular in France in the late 19th century, and was banned in the US and many parts of Europe for 100 years.

But why?

Absinthe is made using herbs including fennel, anise and wormwood:, the last of which gives the drink its green color.

Wormwood also contains thujone, a chemical that, in very high concentrations, can have toxic effects‐毒性作用 on the brain.

Most absinthes also have very high alcohol content — around 45% to 75%. It's believed that absinthe was first created in Switzerland at the end of the 18th century as a type of medicine.

It was used by French soldiers in Algeria to treat fever in the 1840s, and it quickly became popular after they returned home.

Absinthe was soon found in every bar and café, and many people enjoyed the "green hour" every day around 5 p.m.

The "green fairy" became a symbol of artists, with Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso among the many who produced artwork featuring the drink.

But others, such as psychiatrist/səkάɪətrɪst精神科医 Valentin Magnan, believed absinthe was destroying French culture and making people go insane.

Magnan used high concentrations 濃縮液 of thujone and wormwood oil in experiments on animals, claiming that some got "excited" and others died, among other effects.

While there probably wasn't enough thujone in absinthe to create any real effect in humans — and the problems Magnan saw in society were more likely due to people drinking huge amounts of alcohol — Magnan convinced many people that absinthe was dangerous.

Then, in 1905, a man named Jean Lanfray killed his wife and daughters after drinking several liters of alcohol — most of it wine, but also two glasses of absinthe.

This case was used, along with Magnan's findings, to help ban the drink in most of Europe and the US by 1915.

Absinthe is now legal in many countries. But most require it to contain little or no thujone.
