2014年に発生したウクライナ東部紛争（ドンバス戦争）の結果、ドネツク州およびルハンシク州の一部（両州のおよそ40%）は現在、親ロシア派の武装勢力による占領下にある。
独立前のウクライナは旧ソ連に含まれていた。ソ連崩壊後、プーチンがロシアを立て直すと、ウクライナの中で、親ロシア派が現る。
このロシアの支援を 受けた親ロシア派と欧米諸国の支援を受けた親欧米派の争いが2014年ウクライナ東部紛争と呼ばれている。
このウクライナ東部領域はドネツク人民共和国とルガンスク人民共和国として独立国家をつくったが、ウクライナ政府は認めていない。これら両人民共和国を合同したものはノヴォロシア連合共和国とも呼称されたが、このプロジェクトは現在活動を停止している模様。
2015年2月のミンスク合意を受け、ウクライナとこれら両人民共和国との間の大規模な戦闘は終わったのだが、現在もなお散発的に「国境」地帯にて銃撃戦が行われており、その中で日々ウクライナ兵の死傷がメディアにて伝えられてる。
このような経緯があったんですね。ユニフォームにこの政治的背景を背負う地図をプリントしなければ、サッカー選手は試合だけに集中できたんじゃないかな。
