How You Drink Your Coffee Could Reduce Your Risk of Death

A new study has found that drinking coffee may reduce your risk of death — depending on how you drink it.

Researchers from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, surveyed over 170,000 people in the UK about how much coffee they drank five different times over a year. Participants were aged from 37 to 73 years at the time of the survey.

The researchers then looked at death certificates to see which participants had passed away by a median of seven years after the survey period.

The data showed that participants who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee a day — sweetened with an average of one teaspoon of sugar — had about a 30% lower risk of death compared to those who didn't drink coffee at all.

データによると、 1日、1.5 から3.5 カップのコーヒーを飲む人ー砂糖1スプーン入りでーは、30%死亡リスクが低いー全く飲まない人と比べると。

Participants who drank coffee without sugar also had a nearly 30% lower risk of death — but only if they drank 2.5 to 4.5 cups a day.

Risk of death also decreased somewhat for those who drank slightly less or more coffee — but not for those who drank more than 4.5 sugar-sweetened cups daily, for whom the risk of death actually increased.

The results for people who used artificial sweeteners were less consistent-一貫しない, with a significantly reduced risk of death only for those who drank 3.5 to 4.5 cups daily.

Results were similar whether the coffee was instant, ground or decaffeinated.

Previous studies have found that the way coffee is prepared could also affect its impact on health. For example, a 2016 study found that* boiled coffee and French press coffee contain high levels of diterpenes, chemical compounds that can increase cholesterol — but there is very little of these compounds if the coffee is filtered or instant.

Studies have also found that coffee made from the second-most popular type of coffee bean, robusta — grown mainly in Africa and Asia — has greater antioxidant activity than coffee made from arabica, the most popular type. Some research has suggested that antioxidants could help protect the body from heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
