UK PM Boris Johnson Fined for Lockdown Parties :DMM英会話DailyNews予習復習メモ

UK PM Boris Johnson Fined for Lockdown Parties

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that he paid a fine from police for attending a birthday party in his official residence-官邸 of 10 Downing Street /while lockdown rules were in place-実施されている.

This makes Johnson the first British leader to be sanctioned for breaking the law while in office-在職中に.

Johnson and his Conservative government have faced growing outrage since allegations in late 2021 that he and his staff held office parties‐会社や組織が、従業員のために催すパーティー at a time when pandemic restrictions prevented millions in the UK from meeting with family and friends — or even attending funerals

"I have paid the fine and want to offer a full apology," Johnson said. "I understand the anger/ many will feel that I myself fell short-満たしてない・至らない・裏切るwhen it came to observing the very rules which the government I lead /had introduced to protect the public.

I accept in all sincerity that people had the right to expect better."

Downing Street said Johnson was being fined for attending a "gathering of two or more people indoors in the Cabinet Room-閣議 at 10 Downing Street" on June 19, 2020.

The event was a surprise birthday party for the prime minister.

London's Metropolitan Police said it had given at least 50 fines after investigating a dozen events held in 10 Downing Street and other government buildings.

Several politicians, including members of Johnson's own party, have said that the prime minister should resign.

"Boris Johnson [has] broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public," said Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party.

"The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better.

However, Johnson has managed to remain in office, partly because Russia's invasion of Ukraine distracted public and political attention.
