Researchers have investigated around the world, and found that Japanese people are the most considerate to strangers.
"Social mindfulness" refers to thinking about others and considering their needs and wants /before making a decision.
According to the researchers, there's little cost or reward to social mindfulness, and it generally entails quite small acts of kindness.
The study, which was done by a team of 64 international researchers, examined how levels of social mindfulness differed around the world.
More than 8,300 people from 31 different countries and regions were asked to make choices that would reveal how much they considered the needs and wants of someone they didn't know and would never meet.
The participants were shown sets of objects on a computer, with one item in each group being slightly different from the others. For example, they were shown four apples, three of which were green and one of which was red.
The participants were told to imagine/ that they were choosing an apple for themselves, and then after they chose, someone they didn't know/ would get to choose one of the remaining apples.
If the participant chose the only red apple, then the stranger after them wouldn't have a choice of color.
If the participant chose one of the green apples, then the stranger would still have a choice between red and green.
Participants in Japan were found to be the most mindful of the person who would take an object after them. Austria and Mexico were second and third.
Indonesia was at the bottom of the list, just after Turkey and India. The US and Canada were also in the bottom 10.
However, the researchers were careful to say that their results don't suggest that any country is better than another.
"We don't attach a value judgement to the research results," said the study's first author, Niels van Doesum of Leiden University in the Netherlands.
"The main thing is that there are differences. That's what we'd expected, but it hadn't been scientifically proven."
