Study: Our Metabolisms Don't Slow Down in Middle Age
A new study published in Science is debunking much of what we thought we knew about our metabolisms.
For example, the idea that metabolism speeds up during puberty or slows down in middle age is not true, according to the research.
"What's weird is that the timing of our 'metabolic life stages' doesn't seem to match those typical milestones," said study co-author Herman Pontzer from North Carolina's Duke University.
Pontzer and an international team of scientists studied the data of more than 6,400 people aged from eight days old to 95 years old in 29 countries over 40 years.
They discovered that our metabolism changes across four different life stages:
- From birth to around 12 months, calorie-burning rises quickly, and by about age 1, a baby burns calories 50% faster than the average adult.
- Then, from age 1 to about 20, metabolism slows by around 3% per year.
- From age 20 to 60, it stays the same.
- And after 60, metabolism falls by almost 1% per year, so that by age 90, it's 26% slower than in middle age.
"It is a picture we've never really seen before," John Speakman, another of the co-authors, told the BBC.
The study found that metabolism didn't speed up during pregnancy or puberty, nor did it slow down around menopause. And those extra few kilos around middle age? Our metabolism isn't to blame, say the researchers.
However, at 60, our metabolism does change in a big way. Pontzer said this is because our cells are slowing down.
"They are incredibly busy at 1 year old, and when we see declines with age, we are seeing your cells stop working," he told the BBC.
The researchers said that better understanding metabolism could help medicine in the future.
It may be possible that drugs that change our metabolism could even slow some of the diseases of old age.
