Afghanistan Falls to the Taliban

"American have watches but we have time"これは、タリバンの言葉で、本日の講師Stefanから教えてもらいました。

Afghanistan Falls to the Taliban

The Taliban have taken over Afghanistan /two weeks before/ the US had planned to finish withdrawing /the last of its troops from the country/ after a two-decade war.

The Taliban stormed across the country in days, taking all of its major cities as Afghan security forces trained and supplied/ by the US and its allies/ offered little resistance.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 removed the Taliban from power.

But they never left, and in recent years took over much of the Afghan countryside.

The Western-supported government that ran the country for the last 20 years has now collapsed.

President Ashraf Ghani made few public statements as the Taliban took city after city. As they reached the capital, Kabul, he left Afghanistan, saying he had chosen to leave to avoid further bloodshed.

It's not clear where he went. Ordinary Afghans, fearing for the future, rushed to the airport, one of the last routes out of the country.

They worry about the chaos that could follow a Taliban takeover, and that the group could take revenge against those who worked with the Americans or the government.

Many also fear that the Taliban will again make Afghanistan follow the strict version of Islamic law that was maintained when they controlled the country from 1996 to 2001.

Back then, women could not attend school or work outside their homes.

They had to wear body-covering burqas and could only go outside with a male relative.

Music was banned, and thieves were given violent punishment.

The Taliban have tried to look more moderate in recent years, and say they won't take revenge.

But many Afghans don't believe those promises.

Many have compared the events of recent days to the Fall of Saigon, when the North Vietnamese took over the city to end the Vietnam War in 1975.

It became a symbol of US defeat after thousands of Americans and their Vietnamese allies had to be flown out of the city on helicopters.
