DMM英会話DailyNews予習復習メモ:Australian University to Test 'Bionic Eye' on Humans

Australian University to Test 'Bionic Eye' on Humans

Researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, are preparing to test a "bionic eye" on human subjects.

Called the Gennaris bionic vision system, the "eye" looks like a pair of glasses attached to a headband similar to those used on headphones, with a device placed at the back of the head containing a transmitter.

A camera in the glasses sends information to a vision processor about the size of a smartphone. The most important information is then sent wirelessly from the processor, via the transmitter, to a set of 9-millimeter square tiles implanted in the brain.

The tiles use electricity to stimulate the visual cortex to create visual patterns.

Users won't be able to see the world perfectly, however. Rather, they will see basic shapes and outlines made of up to 172 spots of light, which the researchers say should provide enough information to navigate and recognize people and objects.

The researchers have already tested the system on sheep. In a report published in the Journal of Neural Engineering in July, the team said that three sheep used the system for up to three months without any negative effects on their health.

Professor Marcello Rosa of Monash University said that, if successful, the system could represent a new export opportunity for Australia. The researchers also hope the system could be adapted to help people with other neurological ˌnʊrʌˈlɑdʒɪkʌl conditions, including paralysis.

Other universities and businesses are working on similar technology. Scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, have tested a system that uses electricity to "trace" shapes on the surface of the brain, allowing them to be recognized. Using the system, blind participants were able to recognize up to 86 shapes per minute. The results were published in Cell in May.
