Uber to Deliver Medicines in South Africa

Uber has begun delivering over-the-counter medicine to homes in South Africa. The service started on October 15 as part of the company's Uber Eats food delivery service, with users having to show some form of ID when they receive their medicine.

Uber is working with the health group Medicare, which runs over 50 clinics and pharmacies in the country. "Getting the medication South Africans need, when they need it, without the risk of leaving their home is just the beginning," said Medicare CEO Tim Knapp.

Uber hopes the new service will help increase its share of South Africa's online shopping market. Data specialists at Statista say the country's market for online shopping will grow 10% each year up to 2024, at which time it will be worth almost $6 billion. Uber already has over 2 million users in South Africa, and a large part of the country's $600 million food delivery market.

This is not Uber's first medicine delivery service, however. In August, the company started delivering medicine in the US cities of Seattle and Dallas as part of Uber Health, a ride service that helps take patients to their appointments.
