Richest 1% Have Created Double the Carbon of the Poorest 50%
The world's richest 1% have created more than double the carbon emissions of the 3.1 billion people who make up the poorest half of the global population, according to a report by Oxfam.

Confronting Carbon Inequality looks at consumption emissions — the emissions created by the things people buy and how they live — for different income groups between 1990 and 2015. In those 25 years, annual carbon emissions grew by 60%, approximately doubling how much carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere.
The report says the poorest half of the global population was responsible for 7% of emissions during this time, while the wealthiest 1% — about 63 million people — created 15% of emissions. The research also found that the total increase in carbon emissions of the richest 1% was three times more than the increase in emissions among the poorest half of the world.

The report used income data from the World Inequality Database (WID). According to the WID, you would need a pre-tax income of $488,000 per year to be part of the richest 1% in the US. In Singapore, an income of $722,000 would put you in the top 1%, while in India, an annual income of $77,000 would be enough.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that is almost certain that human-produced gases, including carbon dioxide, have caused much of the increase in the Earth's temperature over the past 50 years. The IPCC also says that poorer populations are in the greatest danger from the effects of climate change.

"The over-consumption of a wealthy minority is fueling the climate crisis," said Tim Gore, Head of Climate Policy at Oxfam, and author of the report.
Oxfam is demanding higher wealth taxes and new carbon taxes on luxury items like private jets and yachts, as well as SUVs and frequent flights. The group says the money should be invested in things like green public transport and the creation of low-carbon jobs, as well as to help poorer communities adapt to climate change.

たしかに不公平感は拭えない。個人の贅沢で使用し、それが大気汚染をおこし、地球温暖化につながり、とばっちりを受けるのがCO2をそれほど排出していない貧しい人々。
